Using the News feature to tuck away messages for later reading

The News feature works like spam filtering -- just instead of placing the filtered items into the Spam folder, they are placed into the News folder.  I get lots/tons of newsletters, notifications, and general updates from Facebook, LinkedIn, Google+, various development journals I subscribe to, and general media sites.  Some of it is interesting, some of it is interesting sometimes; none of it needs to be read right now.  I add these items to my News Senders list, using the Mark as News button, and it goes neatly into my News folder for later review and reading.

Getting it out of my Inbox prevents these read-later items from overwhelming the really important, or at least more time-sensitive business email I receive throughout the day.  What I used to do to accomplish the same separation was add these types of items to the Blocked Senders list, which placed them in the Spam folder.  This worked fairly well since specifically blocking them makes them show up in the list without the second list filter for 100% spam items; but it still has them mixed in with all the spam under 100%.

The thing to keep in mind about the Spam folder is that is does a couple of special things to help Users filter through the spam to find things that might not really be spam, and to protect them from harmful content that typically comes in spam messages.

  1. Any items that get a 100% spam rating will be additionally filtered from the default list.  These are typically items that contain misleading links (don't click links in spam items), or have advertisements in them (some newsletters do this too).  The idea of this feature is to make the process of looking for good items in spam a head-start by cutting the list in half as best as can be done automatically.
  2. Only the text part of messages in the Spam folder are shown in the Preview window.  When a User opens an HTML message, it is possible for the sender to track that action, which in turn validates the email address and will increase the spam received going forward.  The other thing only showing the text part of the message does is protect the User's eyes from inappropriate pictures that are sent in spam items.
  3. The other thing the spam folder will do to help keep itself from getting overwhelmed is clean-up time.  After 7 days spam items get deleted from the system.

While these features work great for spam, they don't necessarily work for items that I might really want to read, just not read right now...  My News items are waiting for me in the News folder, even if I take more than a week to get to them; and they have full readability in HTML-view in the Preview window for easy reading.

Productivity in what we are going for.  Are you using the features of MRSware to make your day the most productive it can be?
